Indiana Covered Bridges

A newspaper in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania has reported that Indiana County commissioners will establish a committee to help preserve the last 4 covered bridges in the Indiana County.

All bridges are on the National register of Historical places. Trusal or Dice's covered bridge, Kintersburg, Thomas, and Harmon Bridge are the bridges that are still standing in Indiana County, PA.

Harmon Covered Bridge

The article also states that the only bridge still in use today is Thomas Covered bridge, it's also the longest covered bridge. It was built in 1879.

The oldest Covered bridge in the county is Dice. built in 1870. Being 35 feet long it is the shortest of the county's bridges.

Harmon Covered bridge was built in 1910 for $525.00 it is 40 feet long.

Built in 1877 was Kintersburg for a cost of $893.00.

The committee will help with promoters of the covered bridges. The fred Yenerall collection has photos of all these bridges taken during the years between 1960-1980.

Indiana Covered Bridges

Indiana has 79 covered bridges that are maintained by counties. Indiana is now one of the states working hard to preserve the covered bridges of their state.

They are trying to boost funds to upkeep the bridges, and rehabilitate them. In Parke County, tourism is only second to agriculture for revenue. They are now trying to pass a state bill to increase the amount per bridge for upkeep and maintenance. Hopefully it will pass and the bridges will be able to be maintained for the future generations.

Indiana County Pennsylvania - Christmas Tree Capital

The Fred Yenerall Collection has several photos of road Signs- and signs he saw along side of the road. I found this one in his collection that shows Indiana the Christmas Tree Capital of the world. below is the photo of that sign taken in 1976.



On another one of his road trips he also spotted this perfect shot of white Christmas trees being grown in the batch of green trees. This photo was taken in Cambria County, PA in 1967

He had the amazing ability of seeing something along side of the road and know that it would be a good picture, and would snap it.

Almost every town that he went through he would take a photo of the sign that told what name of the town he was in. His road sign Collection can be found here. Usually he only took one photo of the road signs, so some of them aren't as good as we would like them to be, but we are displaying them basically for historical values.

Sometimes it just wasn't road signs he took, if something was along side of the road he would take that photo this photo was taken along Route 996 Lancaster County PA 1975. I guess it just caught his eye. It is pretty cute though.
