Johnson Covered Bridge - Kentucky (photo from The Ledger Independence)

The Ledger Independence reported today that the renovation of the Johnson Covered Bridge is going along nicely. They are ready to reinforce the support beam.

The bridge is 131 feet long. You can see how the bridge looked in 1966 here at the fmyphotos website.

It's always nice to see them renovating these historical landmarks.

Kentucky's Covered Bridges Book - Read it today!

Walter Robert Laughlin co-authored the book Kentucky Covered Bridges with Melissa Jurgensen, which has been out for a few weeks.

What makes this book highly recommended is that Mr Laughlin has been researching covered bridges in Kentucky for 34 years now. Most of the photos in the book is from his personal collection as well as the facts and research for the bridges. The book gives facts on 126 or 127 bridges that once stood proud in the state of Kentucky.

Many of them are now gone. In fact only about 13 are still standing today. These are the ones still standing.

Many thanks to people like Robert Laughlin because of their effort - the history of these covered bridges will be passed on to future generations. It has been an effort that many of us appriciate you putting forth the effort and time to share the history of these wonderful bridges.

Covered Bridges in Kentucky and a new book

Kentucky is getting alot of press about thier covered bridges now, due to the new book that is out that was written by Robert W. M. Laughlin and Melissa C. Jurgensen.

At 120 Feet long, the orginal bridge was built in 1855. restored in 1906 and 1990. And when it was damaged by flooding in March 1, 1997, it was rebuilt after that.
