Ohio Covered Bridges

Cincinnati.com wrote a nice article about covered bridges in Ohio recently. Reading through the article I did notice that were some errors. They stated that by one estimate Ohio has nearly 300 covered bridges in the state of Ohio, and PA beats them by only 1-2 more than that. Right now Pennsylvania has 202 bridges still standing. While I don't know the exact number for Ohio, I know that Pennsylvania has the most bridges, so Ohio has to be less than 200 bridges still standing. Ohio is like Pennsylvania restoring and preserving as many of these fine covered bridges as they can, but like the rest of the states lose a few here and there due to arson, flooding and just the age of the bridge it will just collapse.

The Fred Yenerall Collection has many covered bridges from Ohio. I am still sorting them out by counties, there are quite a few counties that I still need to do. With so many photos in the collection, it does take allot of time.

What I like about looking at the photos of the covered bridges in Ohio is that in 1976 they painted several of the covered bridges in Red White and Blue for the bicentennial. I thought how appropriate that they did to with the covered bridges a link to the past and an Icon to the United States. Without the covered bridges, we wouldn't be the country we are today. They needed the Bridges to move merchandise, to get to the grist mills, and to explore other parts of the country. How much pride they had in their work to have bridges still functioning after 100+ years of use, weather and elements. Not only have many bridges stood the test of time, they are out in the elements taking abuse daily from Mother Nature and still standing up to her.

Covered bridges are truly a gift from other generations to us. We photograph them, visit them and walking or driving through them we image what it must of been like for people when the bridge was brand new. It's a gift that we need to preserve for the future generations.

News Report - Stonelick-Williams Corner Covered Bridge

According to a newspaper article today at Cincinnati.Com about the restoriation of Stonelick-Williams Corner Covered Bridge. The weight limit will be increased to permit buses and trucks. The Federal Highway Administration will give $360,000 to help with the project.

The work should be done by fall 2009.

This bridge was built in 1878 by M. Collins. It is 140 feet long.

Old Barn in Ohio From 1967

There is somthing about this photo that caught my eye. It just looks so weathered, and unstable, yet quaint. I have no information on the barn, not even sure if it's still standing. I just liked it.

It's in the newly uploaded, but I'm getting ready to move them later today, to put them in their own section. But don't fret, I still have many picutures to upload, I have some more restored and ready to upload today if I have time. Time = there is never enough.

I was contacted by Grandpap's cousin last week, He helped me alot with information about Grandpap's childhood. Many of the facts I didn't have a clue about. He also was kind enough to name some of the people that we had photos of that we didn't know who they were.

The www.ohiobarns.com has an awesome website. They have so many unique and old photos on that site. They have the best and most photos I have seen of the mailpouch barns, with the history to go with it. I always get sidetracked by their strange and unusual road side sightings that people have sent in from all over the country.
The site also showcases several photos from the Fred Yenerall Collection with more photos of round barns and old mills to be added to their site soon from the Fred Yenerall collection.

Newton Falls Covered Bridge, Trumbull County Ohio

Newton Falls Covered Bridge Trumbull County, Ohio.

Photo is from The Fred Yenerall Collection and was taken in 1965.

Newton Falls Covered Bridge was built in 1831 and is either 117 feet long (as stated on the website) or 123 feet long (as stated on the sign erected for the bridge).

This is the last surviving covered bridge in Trumbull county Ohio. It also is the only covered bridge in Ohio that has an integrated Walk way. The walk way was attached to the bridge in 1921 so that school children could use it on their way to school. The bridge is still in its original location, and is the second oldest covered bridge in Ohio.

According to the article on the website at www.vindy.com The Trumbull County officials are moving ahead with the rehabilitation of the Covered Bridge, it was started in July 2005, and is costing $1 million dollars to restore.
