New Hampshire -Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge Repairs start 9/10/07

The bridge will begin being repaired starting September 10, 2007.
The wooden deck is expected to take about 6 weeks to be repaired, the bridge will be closed from 7:30-3:30 daily from September 10-14 then will reopen with a single lane till the 19th.

This bridge was built in 1866 for $9,000. It is 449.5 feet long. It is owned and maintained by New Hampshire Department of Transportation.

This used to be a toll bridge until June 1, 1943. It was renovated in 1954, then damaged from a flood and ice in 1977. The state repaired it again but was closed to traffic in 1987 due to deteriorate condition. It finally reopened on December 8,1989 to traffic. This is reported to be the largest wooden covered bridge in the United Stated, and the longest 2 span bridge in the world. This has been a National Historic Landmark since 1970.

Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge New Hampshire

Starting today April 3, 2007 and for the next 3 days Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge in New Hampshire will be repaired. New planks and lights will be installed. During that time, traffic will be down to 1 lane during the construction. It was restored previously in 1954, 1977, and last time was 1989. Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge was built in 1866, and built by James Tasker and Bela Fletcher for a cost of $9,000. This bridge was not built over the Connecticut River, it was framed, and built nearby then moved to its location. It was a toll bridge from 1936- June 1, 1943, after New Hampshire bought it. It is the longest covered wooden bridge in the United States with a length of 449 1/2 feet long. The bridge is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. Cornish-Windsor Covered bridge connects 2 towns in 2 separate states, Cornish New Hampshire, and Windsor Vermont. Flood damaged it in 1977 as were the first three bridges that once stood on this same site . The state repaired it for $25,000 after the flood of 1977. Then in 1987 the bridge was closed due to deterioration. It was reopened to traffic on December 9,1989 after it was repaired again at a cost of $4.45 million dollars.
