Update on Westmoreland House Photo

House built in 1826.

It has been brought to my attention that this house that Fred Yenerall took 1971 is now up for sale. It's nice to know that it's still standing. The realtor's website also gave some fantastic information on this house.

Historic Facts about the house From the website of the Realtor:

• The area known as Youngstown was settled in the late 1700s and early 1800s. Believed to be on a road cut through the area during the war between England and France in 1755-60, a number of taverns and inns operated in the area at the turn of the century.
• The area became even more popular with travelers when the Greensburg Turnpike, part of the road running between Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, was authorized in 1815.
• It wasn’t until the construction of Rt. 30 north of Youngstown that it became a quite residential community.
• As would be expected from an area settled this early, many local homes, churches, schools, and businesses have a rich and long history.
• But perhaps no individual’s history is as well known in the area as Arnold Palmer, who was born in 1929 in Latrobe and frequented the Latrobe Country Club with regularity as early as age 5.
• Arnold and his brother, Gerry, not only both still own homes in Latrobe, they are your neighbors.
• The home for sale, 207 Arnold Palmer, was built in 1826 and was the home of Jacob Brindle.
• Jacob’s grandfather, Lawrence Brindle, came to Youngstown in the early 1800s and purchased a large tract of land, where he operated a farm with his two sons, John (Jacob’s father) and George.
• George moved to Ohio while John, and later Jacob, inherited the farm.
• Jacob and wife Peggy Aukerman and they had three decendents.
• One son, E. Lewis Brindle, moved to Latrobe in his twenties and engaged in the grocery business.
• Another son, John, continued to operate the farm with his wife and seven decendents
  One of them, Jacob, ran the farm and worked the coal deposits on the property for 25 years until he moved his farm to Latrobe.
• This home has a rich history as both the site of an inn and a stagecoach shop.
• Even more intriguing, a hidden compartment in the attic and local lore lead the current owners to believe it was once a stop on the Underground Railroad.

I love getting updated on these photos, and knowing that these places are still standing, and Tina, who brought this house to my attention, (she is the one that own's the round-house in a previous entry) also found updated photos of this house and forwarded them to me. It appears that the house still looks the same now as it did back then, or at least the front of the house does.

Hannastown Pennsylvania

This settlement of Hannastown was destroyed during the American Revolutionary War, which during one of the final acts on July 13, 1782 the British, joined by the Seneca Indians, set the settlement afire totally destroying it. The only thing that was left standing was the a tavern and courthouse and fort. Hannastown was taken by surprised, as some were attending a wedding at Miller's Blockhouse when the settlement was attacked. Several guests were captured and killed at the wedding ceremony itself. The children were either captured, and sold, or killed.
Though the settlement of Hannastown was rebuilt the settlement never recovered after the raid. Even though it was the first court west of the Alleghenies which was moved to "new Town" which is now known as Greensburg after the raid.
In the summer of 1973 - Hannastown was reconstructed with the Hanna Tavern and courthouse, three vintage log houses, revolutionary era fort and blockhouse. There is also a wagon shed that has an authentic 18th century wagon.
Fred Yenerall was there often for many hours taking photos of the rebuilding of the courthouse. He was also there when the Appalachian Wagon train came through and spent the weekend at Hannastown. He had made many trips to Hannastown to photograph the changes in seasons, and to capture as many memories as he could over this historic site.

There is no known drawing of the settlement.

Spring at Greengate Mall

Greengate Mall had car shows, this one shows a 1911 Buick that was part of a display one time at the mall. Greengate Mall, which was located off of Route 30 in Greensburg always celebrated spring. They always had live bunnies, the Easter Bunny, and spring themes throughout the mall. This photo also shows Isaly's. mmm... I really miss their food sometimes. Click here to see more photos.

Storybook Forest Mill

Its springtime here in North Carolina, and people are starting to cut grass, reminds me of my youth, when my grandparents took us to Storybook forest, and Idlewild Park in Pennsylvania. As for the grist mills, the covered bridges, and the old mailpouch barns, they are just about done, all restored, and uploaded.

75 New Photos added today

Website has been updated with 75 new photos. These are photos of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania,nature scenes, photos from Storybook Forest, Idlewild Park, Churches, log houses, Fort Ligonier, and also another painted fire hydrant. It seems that for 1976 people painted the fire hydrants in Red White and Blue. They are cute, and Grandpap was drawn to them.

New gallery has been created, Misc. Photos, these photos didn't really qualify for any other gallery, so they are being placed in their own gallery. This is the one with all the cool photos,

In 1978 The Budwiser Clydesdale horses came to the Greengate Mall, and Grandpap got a photo of them.

1973 Appalachian Wagon train came through Greensburg Pennsylvania. They stayed at Hannastown. The Gallery is here.
Also uploaded today was photos from the National Wagon Train that came through Greensburg in 1976. That gallery is here.

Historic buildings were added. As well as some Covered Bridges, and barns. Road Signs gallery was updated. Wood Churches were also updated.
There are also some new photos for Hannastown. I will be scanning the rebuilding of Hannastown this weekend, look for them the early part of next week.

New Gallery - Westmoreland County Pennsylvania

A new Gallery has been created with all of Westmoreland County photo's in it. I worked on that yesterday, there are still more photos for the county that needs to go up, but they haven't been restored yet. I will be creating gallery's for each county, as well as having the photos sorted by subjects.
I also updated some historic information on the covered bridges that we have posted. I have Perry county completed, and Cumberland county. It takes alot of research to find the information I need and want on the website.

Greensburg Railroad Station

The Greensburg Railroad Station is one of the Historical Landmarks in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania. It was built by William Kaufman in 1911 on Harrison Avenue Greensburg, Pa. It was designed by William Cookman. It is unoccupied at the time. It is still owned by Penn Central Railroad.

In 1849 Greensburg started preparing for trains. The 1st time a train came through the station was November 29, 1852. This photo shows the Great Clock tower that was built on the station.

There was a tunnel built over Main street to accommodate the trains.

Greensburg Pennsylvania Storm Damage

The whole front of the building fell at that time.

I read on WTAE's channel 4's news in Pittsburgh today, where the building was damaged again today. You can read the story from WTAE here .

I can't believe that they had almost 80mph wind there. I remember once that Greensburg area had a tornado in the 1970's, alot of that damage was along route 66. But that was was in the summer months, not 3 weeks before Christmas. So far I haven't heard if they were declared this a tornado or not. Greensburg really should be getting snow, at this time of year, not tornado's.

I see where they are buiding an annex onto the building, and part of that fell because of the storm, injuring a person.
